MarkoHi everybody,
I'm currently planning a 2-week vacation trip to the Algarve province in Portugal. As a castle "junkie" I also would like to visit several castles (preferably ruins) when I'm there. But I have a hard time finding some good sites with pictures about castles in that region. Does anyone have suggestions about websites and castles to visit? Or perhaps a book?
Thanks in advance

The Algarve isn't rich on castles, I believe.

Anyway I found one site about castles in Portugal, which gives some information about the Fortress of Sagres:

QueuxgropiusThe main castle in the Algarve region is the moorish castle at Silves,15 kilometres north-east of Portimao and 13 kilometres north of Carvoeira.Little remains other than the walls, however,
MarkoHere's a page with a list of castles in the Algarve.
Still on the hunt for sites with more pics though. http://www.algarve-estate.com/algarve/algarvecastelos.htm
Also, if you know of any Spanish castles in the Huelva province bordering the Algarve, I'd be very interested.
MarkoStill looking though I'm flying coming Monday. The castles in the Algarve that I found on the net are in these towns:

  • Albufeira
  • Alcantarilha
  • Alcoutim
  • Aljezur
  • Alvor
  • Castro Marim
  • Loulé
  • Paderne
  • Salir
  • Silves
  • Tavira

Now lets see which ones I can find and visit during my vacation ;-)

I also just found this site about Portugese castles http://castelosdeportugal.no.sapo.pt/

I am just back from portugal (to be exactly Lisbon, a city with nice palaces and castles in the neigboorhood ), you can also buy good castle books, there only in portuguese ;( (find God thx one in English, the book contained only three castles for the Algarve region) and very expensive.

Hope you will have fun and a nice holiday.

MarkoHi everybody,

I'm back from my Portugese holiday. I managed to visit 7 castles (Alcoutim, Castro Marim, Loulé, Mértola, Paderne, Silves and Tavira) and 3 forts in two weeks. All will appear on my website in the coming weeks at www.castles.nl.

I also visited Silves Castle which turned out to be an disappointment. It was totally turned into private houses. Just a very small corner of foundations and vestiges of two towers were nearly visible. Really not worth your time although it gets mentioned in almost all the holidayguides.

I was also able to get my hands on these books:
- "Castelos, Fortalezas e Torres da Região do Algarve", author V. Coutinho, published in 1997
- "Guias dos Castelos antigos de Portugal", volume 1 and 2, author CT. North, published by Bertrand Editoria in 2002
- "Portuguese Castles", part 1 in the Heritage Themes serie, published by the Instituto Portugués do Patrimonio Arquetectónico (IPPAR).

LevanShould think you'll have these castles all to yourself while the football is on!
MarkoFootball? What football?? Oh you mean the European Championships. I was glad to be out of the country just before all that began. As you might have guessed; I'm no football fan ;-)
